Con las instalaciones de transporte neumático, se pueden transportar por tuberías sólidos dispersos a grandes distancias.
El material sólido se transporta desde un depósito de alimentación por una canaleta vibratoria hasta un flujo de aire. Una tobera de inyección intercambiable dispersa el sólido en el flujo de aire. El flujo de aire transporta el sólido en sentido ascendente por la tubería. El transporte termina en un depósito colector.
Dependiendo de la velocidad y del contenido en sólidos del flujo de aire, se pueden presentar diferentes modos de transporte: a velocidades elevadas, el sólido se mueve distribuido uniformemente en toda la sección de la tubería de transporte (transporte volante). Al disminuir la velocidad se forman junto a las paredes del tubo, madejas y conglomerados que resbalan por efecto de su mayor velocidad de sedimentación. Las madejas y los conglomerados se deshacen continuamente en el aire y se vuelven a formar. Una velocidad menor que la velocidad de sedimentación de las partículas individuales lleva finalmente al transporte en tapón. Los diferentes modos de transporte se pueden observar a través de la pared transparente de la tubería.
Para determinar la pérdida de presión y la velocidad del flujo se dispone de puntos de medición en todas las posiciones relevantes. La velocidad del flujo de aire se fija con un regulador de presión. El caudal másico de sólidos se puede fijar con un potenciómetro para un intervalo amplio de oscilaciones de la canaleta vibratoria. El aire comprimido hay que suministrarse mediante la red del laboratorio.
Como material sólido se recomienda la utilización de guisantes o plástico granulado.
