Los engranajes son elementos de máquina y se enmarcan dentro de los elementos de transmisión o transformación. Su tarea es la de transmitir el par motor y el número de revoluciones entre los miembros de guía, como las ruedas y las poleas. La transmisión del movimiento se produce a través de uniones con arrastre de fuerza (con correas o ruedas de fricción) o con uniones continuas (con ruedas dentadas, correas dentadas o cadenas).
El equipo de ensayo GL 100 sirve para ilustrar el funcionamiento de los engranajes de correas, las ruedas de fricción y los engranajes.
Pueden explicarse gráficamente conceptos y relaciones fundamentales como, por ejemplo, la relación de transmisión, la inversión del sentido de giro, el círculo primitivo y el módulo o la función de las ruedas intermedias.
Un bastidor sólido de perfil de aluminio anodizado forma la base del aparato. Los alojamientos de las ruedas se sujetan con palancas tensoras en ranuras en T del perfil. Son fácilmente desmontables y corredizos en sentido horizontal y permiten gran cantidad de diferentes variantes de montaje.
Todos los ensayos se realizan a mano. El tamaño del equipo de ensayo garantiza que los experimentos también sean visibles óptimamente para un grupo mayor de aprendices.
