En contraposición a un mecanismo de biela-manivela, el mecanismo de yugo escocés genera un movimiento de carrera puramente armónico.
El KI 120 sirve para la generación y estudio de un movimiento de carrera puramente armónico. El equipo de ensayo está formado por un plato de manivela giratorio, una biela motriz y un cilindro fijo. En un extremo, la biela motriz está conectada con la manivela por medio del plato de manivela. Modificando la posición de la manivela en el plato de manivela, se puede ajustar el radio de manivela en tres posiciones distintas.
En el otro extremo, la biela motriz está conectada con el cilindro fijo. Este extremo modela el pistón.
El ángulo se regula mediante un plato de manivela y se lee en una escuadra graduada integrada en la placa de base. Para medir la carrera, el cilindro dispone de una regla graduada de acero de precisión milimétrica.
Los elementos se fijan sobre una placa base. Las dos asas permiten transportar y apilar el equipo fácilmente.
