El elemento principal de este equipo es un cuerpo de acero ranurado, susceptible de deformación elástica. Al apretar la unión atornillada se deforma la zona ranurada generándose una fuerza axial en el tornillo. La deformación producida se registra con un reloj de comparación mecánico y está en relación directa con la fuerza de sujeción generada por el tornillo.
La unión atornillada se aprieta y se suelta con una llave dinamométrica especial que se acciona con gran sensibilidad con ayuda de un husillo roscado. Utilizando un cojinete axial se puede eliminar prácticamente el rozamiento de la cabeza del tornillo, de modo que se puede medir únicamente el rozamiento de la unión roscada.
