En la aviación o la navegación espacial, el giroscopio desempeña un papel fundamental a la hora de estabilizar la posición o como instrumento de navegación en lo que se denomina navegación inercial. El elemento principal de un giroscopio es una masa de rotación rápida. Un giroscopio libre tratará de mantener la posición de su eje de rotación en el espacio independiente de la gravedad. Esta propiedad se aprovecha, por ejemplo, en el horizonte artificial de un avión. Si el giroscopio se coloca en un bastidor, se le denomina giroscopio conducido. Si en un giroscopio conducido se aplica una fuerza perpendicular al eje de rotación, entonces el giroscopio ejerce un determinado momento: el momento de giroscopio. La rotación que se produce perpendicular al eje de rotación se denomina precesión. El giroscopio tiene, por tanto, tres ejes que se encuentran en vertical los unos en relación con los otros: el eje de rotación del giroscopio, el eje de precesión y el eje del efecto del giroscopio, que provoca el momento de giroscopio.
El equipo TM 630 permite familiarizarse con el funcionamiento de un giroscopio. Los momentos que se generan por la precesión del giroscopio se pueden determinar de manera experimental.
El giroscopio está formado por un peso oscilante que se acciona con ayuda de un motor electrónico con un elevado número de revoluciones. El giroscopio se ubica en un bastidor de cardán. El bastidor también se puede girar en el eje vertical con ayuda de un segundo motor eléctrico. De esta manera se genera la precesión del giroscopio. Debido a la precesión, el giroscopio ejerce un momento, el momento de giroscopio, en el eje horizontal. El momento de giroscopio provoca una desviación del bastidor interno. Con ayuda de una palanca y de un peso móvil, se puede ajustar el momento de giroscopio.
El número de revoluciones de ambos motores eléctricos para la rotación y la precesión es ajustable y se indica digitalmente.
La cubierta protectora transparente que cubre el brazo rotatorio se encarga de garantizar la seguridad: el equipo solo puede funcionar si la cubierta protectora está correctamente colocada.
