En el dimensionamiento de depósitos de agua se tienen que tener en cuenta los procesos de desagüe no estacionarios. Estos procesos ocurren, p. ej., en depósitos de retención de aguas pluviales y en presas.
El objetivo principal de un depósito de retención pluvial es retrasar el proceso de desagüe por medio de un almacenamiento temporario. Las presas sirven como depósitos permanentes en el suministro de agua y/o conversión de energía o en la protección contra inundaciones. El nivel del agua sube antes de que sea conducida a través de un rebose.
Los procesos de desagüe salen de los depósitos a través de tuberías o galerías de presión, entre otras cosas. Una chimenea de equilibrio debe evitar que se produzcan golpes de ariete en las tuberías y robineterías cuando ocurran cambios rápidos en el caudal.
Con el banco de ensayos HM 143 se demuestran procesos de desagüe no estacionarios en depósitos de reserva, así como el funcionamiento de una chimenea de equilibrio. El banco de ensayos contiene un depósito con vertedero ajustable y un segundo depósito hundido con rebose y línea de desagüe. En la línea de desagüe de este depósito está incorporada una chimenea de equilibrio.
En el ensayo “depósito de retención pluvial”, el depósito A y depósito B simular una alcantarilla con compuerta. El flujo es regulado por medio de válvulas que se encuentran en la línea de desagüe. De esta manera se muestran unos típicos procesos de desagüe retardados.
En el ensayo “embalses”, se demuestran procesos de desagüe no estacionarios en dos depósitos a largo plazo. En este ensayo, el vertedero sirve de aliviadero libre.
En el ensayo “chimenea de equilibrio”, se genera un golpe de ariete mediante el cierre rápido de una válvula de compuerta en la línea de desagüe. Las oscilaciones son visibles como movimiento pendular del nivel del agua en la chimenea de equilibrio.
Los niveles de agua en los depósitos y en una chimenea de equilibrio son registradas mediante sensores de presión y representadas con ayuda del software GUNT.
