La medición con galgas extensométricas es el procedimiento más importante para la determinación de la deformación longitudinal. Las magnitudes mecánicas se miden a través de métodos eléctricos.
La técnica de medición con galgas extensométricas es de aplicación relativamente sencilla, posee una alta resolución y se puede emplear directamente en el punto de interés. Ahora bien, una galgas extensométrica no es un instrumento de medición en sí mismo.
La galga extensométrica tiene que ser puesta por el propio usuario en un estado operativo tras la instalación. La calidad de esta técnica de medición no depende sólo de la galga extensométrica, sino también, y fundamentalmente, de la forma de aplicación y su ejecución. Las galgas extensométricas trabajan con una gran fiabilidad si los usuarios dominan el manejo teórico y práctico de estos sensibles elementos sensores.

Para que los puntos de medición funcionen correctamente, primero se preparan meticulosamente las superficies de los elementos a ensayar y a continuación se colocan las galgas extensométricas correspondientes.Pegamentos especiales se encargan de que las deformaciones del elemento se transmitan sin pérdidas a las galgas extensométricas. Además, la galgas extensométrica se protege, con medios de cobertura apropiados, de factores externos como puede ser la humedad, así como de daños mecánicos.
